Language of the street in paint | CityNews

Boynes?s urban paintings installed at Brenda May Gallery

CANBERRA painter and former Canberra Artist of the Year and Head of Painting at the ANU?s School of Art, Robert Boynes, is?excited about?his new show, ?Language of the Street?, to open at Brenda May Gallery, 2 Danks Street Waterloo in Sydney, this weekend.

Anybody who has ?been in the ACT ?Legislative Assembly?s public reception room will be familiar with Boynes?s urban scenes, translated from his own photographs, screen printed then expertly reworked in paint.

Boynes writes: ??My work evokes the sounds, sensations and body postures found in our urban spaces ? the language of the street. Are we as viewers, simultaneously the observer and the observed ? stepping in and stepping out of the frame? A body, traced or sprayed like a tattoo on the wall of a narrow laneway, leaving the skeletal remains and memory of a dance. It is the conversion of noise into motion, into fractured image and crackling light.?

?Language of the Street?, at Brenda May Gallery, 2 Danks Street Waterloo,? Sydney, Tue-Fri 11-6, Sat 10-6, until July 7. Visit www.brendamaygallery.com.au
