Robert Cray?s summer tour hits Mt. Laurel Pocono Mountains Performing Arts Center

American blues guitarist and five-time Grammy Award winner Robert Cray will be releasing his 21st record later on this year, but you don?t have to wait long to get your dose of the ?Strong Persuader?s? live show. Cray and his band will be performing with special guest Little Feat June 9, at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Laurel Pocono Mountains Performing Arts Center in Tamiment.
We recently spoke with Cray about his new record, accomplishments and life on the road.

Talk about recording the new album.
We recorded back in April and it is scheduled for release the first week of September. We recorded in southern California with producer Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, Black Crowes, Rush). It?s all new material with the exception of one cover we did by Bobby Parker called ?Blues Get Off My Shoulder.? There are a lot of timely songs on the record meaning about the political situation going on, people?s lives via the housing market, things like that.

What was your introduction to blues and rock music?
Through my parents record collection. My parents had a really good collection of blues, jazz, R&B, and gospel. (When I started playing guitar), it was through the excitement of The Beatles.

What do think about satellite and internet radio?
It?s huge! Back when I was growing up, everything was on and a lot of things got played on any one station. Now you have all these different stations to pick and choose and everything is broken down into sub-categories. It kind of becomes a bit much. If I turn on a blues station, it becomes too bluesy for me! I need a mix! I think it?s healthy to hear a lot of different styles of music.

What accomplishments stand out to you in your career so far?
Having the opportunity to have met and to stand on stage with certain people like John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters or the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. When you?re younger and you?ve listened to that music and then all of a sudden an opportunity comes up and you get to be on stage with them, that is better than anything.

How do you physically and mentally prepare for this run of shows you are about to begin?
You prepare by not looking how daunting it is and do one day at a time. I actually enjoy being out on the road. That chance to have that kind of camaraderie, where every day you have to come out and give it the best that you can do. We just get out there and have fun on a daily basis.

With nomination in hand, Romney turns focus on Obama

His win in Texas on Tuesday put him over the top in the delegate count, and now the entire GOP establishment is focused on November.

What's next for Mitt Romney? The Republican presidential nomination finally in hand, he will spend the next three months trying to undercut President Barack Obama on the economy while portraying himself as Mr. Fix It for a nation with stubbornly and painfully high unemployment.

Romney also faces key decisions between now and his acceptance of the party's nomination in late August in Florida: Where should he compete most aggressively? Who should be his running mate?

At the same time, he must dive anew into fundraising and work to win over voters who are distracted by their own summer plans and day-to-day pocketbook worries ? while withstanding Obama's attacks on his own claims as a jobs creator.

Not that Romney is publicly sweating the hurdles that come with being the little-known challenger to a personally popular president.

"People will get to know me better," Romney told Fox News in an interview that aired Wednesday, the day after he sealed the GOP nomination with his primary election victory in Texas. He says the general election campaign is only beginning even though his chief challenger dropped out more than six weeks ago.

With a smile, he said of the voters, "My guess is they're going to get to know more about me than they'd like to by the time we're finished."

As if on cue, Obama's campaign opened a fresh critique of the GOP nominee-in-waiting, assailing his economic record as governor of Massachusetts. It's the second phase of an effort by Obama to define Romney negatively in voters' eyes. The Democrat already has spent weeks hammering the Republican on his record at the private equity company he founded.

Obama himself made a courtesy call to Romney to congratulate him on his nomination victory. An Obama aide said the president told Romney in a brief and cordial chat that he looked forward to debating America's future with him.

Romney spent the day in California, plunging into a week filled with fundraisers and efforts to unite Republicans after a divisive primary season. Already he's proven adept at both, hauling in enough cash to cut into the advantage that Obama has while getting most of his former Republican rivals to close ranks around him.

Those efforts ? and the turning of his primary campaign into a general election operation ? have been his prime focus. He's making only a handful of public appearances for now, but aides say they expect the campaign to ramp up to a full sprint by July 4. Romney has said he plans to take a week off around the holiday, suggesting that may be the time when he makes final deliberations on whom to choose as his vice presidential nominee.

Little is known about just where in that process Romney may be, though there is no shortage of Republican rising stars informally auditioning for the role.

While work on that front is certainly going on behind the scenes, Romney's aides are spending this week publicly pressing anew a criticism that the candidate himself has been making for months against Obama. They're highlighting the hundreds of millions of dollars in economic stimulus money that the administration provided to Solyndra, the solar-energy company that went bankrupt and whose executives had contributed to Obama's campaign.

It is a sign of the overarching argument Romney will make against Obama in the coming weeks: that Obama's economic efforts have been politically motivated, have wasted taxpayer dollars and, ultimately, have failed.

The renewed Solyndra criticism is also an attempt to answer Obama's recent criticism ? in speeches and advertisements ? of Romney's tenure at the helm of Bain Capital. Obama has argued that Romney's time as a private equity executive before entering politics ? the basis for his campaign's claim that he's best suited to lead an economic recovery ? was aimed at enriching shareholders, not serving the public.

Romney largely survived that opening salvo, judging by early polls and interviews with both Republicans and Democrats.

National surveys show Obama either statistically tied with Romney or only slightly ahead of him. And polls in the most hotly contested states show Romney competitive with Obama.

"They haven't worked," GOP strategist Charlie Black, an informal Romney adviser, said of the Bain criticisms. "People are worried about the economy and jobs."

Democratic strategist Steve Elmendorf said too few voters had heard the argument.

"The reality is it's June," said Elmendorf. "To say the Bain argument has worked or not is ridiculously premature."

A handful of swing-voting states will be the most hard fought as Obama and Romney aggressively build get-out-the-vote organizations and air a flood of advertisements in their efforts to reach the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House.

Across the country, Romney's campaign is going through growing pains as it seeks to turn a stripped-down primary operation into a full-scale general election campaign. Aides say offices will open and more staff will join the team, but they also say they don't anticipate being able to match the staffing levels of Obama, who has had teams in place for months in states like Florida and Ohio. The Republican National Committee also is in the midst of boosting its staffing to help Romney.

Already, Obama's and Romney's campaigns, as well as super PACs supporting and opposing each, have spent more than $80 million in advertising on the general election campaign through the month of June, according to ad-tracking reports provided to The Associated Press by Smart Media Group of Alexandria, Va.

Of that, Obama's campaign has spent $31 million-plus on TV ads in about 10 states. He's been on the air most heavily in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, an indication of where his team may think the race will be won or lost. A Democratic-leaning super PAC also has been on the air to help him, though it's spent only about $6.3 million.

Romney himself has run ads in just five battleground states: Iowa, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. But he's been significantly helped by pro-Romney outside groups, who have been on the air in several others ? most heavily in Florida, Ohio and Virginia.

Even so, Republican outfits, including Romney's campaign and supporting super PACS, have combined to spend about as much as Obama and his allies. And in the coming weeks, Romney plans to focus heavily on fundraising so that he'll be able to make strategic decisions about where to devote most of it state by state.

To that end, Romney is spending the week courting donors in California, starting Wednesday in Fresno, Bakersfield and in Hillsborough, a wealthy enclave just outside San Francisco.

He planned major fundraising events Thursday, Friday and Saturday in southern California. On Tuesday, Romney was in Las Vegas wooing Sheldon Adelson, the primary financing source of a group that backed Newt Gingrich's failed primary campaign. And Romney also attended a fundraiser hosted by Donald Trump.

Guest Commentary: President Obama should make Chimney Rock a national monument

Between Pagosa Springs and Durango is one of the country's most important cultural areas. Chimney Rock encompasses hundreds of Ancestral Puebloan archeological sites within the shadow of its soaring twin spires. Few more ancient and ethereal places exist in all of America.

Without question, Chimney Rock is a vital part of our shared cultural heritage. Yet it has never received the funding, recognition or protection it so richly deserves. The National Trust for Historic Preservation wants to change that, and we are asking all Coloradoans to stand with us.

On May 7, I sent a letter to President Obama requesting that he exercise his authority under the Antiquities Act to establish the Chimney Rock National Monument. He has used this authority twice in the last year, and we believe there are compelling reasons for him to do the same here.

For starters, Chimney Rock is a true architectural marvel. Crafted by the Chacoan people while Europe was still in the midst of the Middle Ages, it comprises 6 million stones and 25,000 tons of earth and clay, all transported two miles to the top of the mesa without the wheel.

Perhaps the most dramatic and well-known of the remaining buildings is the Great House Pueblo, which was likely used as an observatory for the annual summer solstice and, every 18 years, the northern lunar standstill. The pueblo is perfectly positioned to frame the rising moon between Chimney Rock's twin spires, and the mystical sight still draws visitors today.

Indeed, Chimney Rock remains a place of great spiritual and cultural significance to modern Pueblo Indians. It is their story, written on the land. And their story is an inextricable part of our collective American story. In a very tangible way, preserving Chimney Rock helps to weave our multi-cultural nation together.

That's why the National Trust asked President Obama for this national monument designation. As an organization, we work to save the places that tell America's stories. We identify National Treasures like Chimney Rock, and then engage a wide range of people and partners in strategic campaigns to protect these irreplaceable places.

In the case of Chimney Rock, we have worked closely with the Colorado congressional delegation, which strongly supports the national monument designation, over the past few years to introduce legislation in Congress. But so far, the bills have languished.

Meanwhile, this remarkable place has no designation equivalent to its significance. Its annual budget supports just two part-time federal employees. Dedicated volunteers at the non-profit Chimney Rock Interpretative Association operate the site, and they do a fantastic job, as evidenced by the fact that more than 9,000 people visit Chimney Rock during the five months it's open every year.

A national monument designation could expand that number dramatically. Such designations typically bring people, which would mean much-needed heritage tourist dollars in the Archuleta County and Four Corners areas. They also spur increased federal funding and resources, both of which would enhance the visitor experience, while permitting Indian tribes and pueblos to continue their traditional practices.

Local, regional and national leaders have lined up behind this designation, recognizing it as a "win-win" outcome. Bi-partisan supporters include: the Colorado congressional delegation; the Archuleta County commissioners; the Town of Pagosa Springs; the Pagosa Springs Chamber of Commerce; national, regional and local preservation and conservation organizations; community partners and archeologists.

This unique place clearly deserves protection. With that in mind, I ask all Coloradoans to join us in urging President Obama to utilize his authority under the Antiquities Act to establish the Chimney Rock National Monument. Together, we can ensure that a true national treasure endures for generations to come.

Luis Fonseca from Portugal had an idea for an iPad 4 concept, that involves a physical keyboard and an interesting design. This new iPad is based on other Apple products blended into a single unit.

The iPad 4 features a built in keyboard, that slides from the bottom of the slate. It features Bang & Olufsen speakers, a 12 megapixel 1080p camera, an aluminum frame and the ability to be easily maintained and recycled. The idea here is to design the perfect laptop replacement and also the complete tablet. With this new device, you?ll forever replace the need for a laptop or netbook. A portable hard disk is also included in this bundle to keep the data safe, but with iCloud out there, I don?t quite see the need for it.

From the looks of the device I imagine that there?s a way to prop up the screen and still use the keyboard, or else the typing angle would be weird. Also I?m hoping for maybe a 7 or 8 inch diagonal here to keep the device portable and turn it into the iPad Mini that everyone wants. What do you say? A quad core CPU would also fit right in!

LG unveiled the production version of its revolutionary 55-inch OLED to European dealers and journalists in Monaco this week?against the backdrop of the final preparations for the weekend?s Grand Prix race. The prototype was first seen at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show?in Las Vegas last January.

The company?is targeting the first shipments of the TV ?? which will cost $10,000? ? to?the United States, South?Korea and select European countries, starting?in July.

The 55EM9600?s screen is just 4 mm thick, and uses white organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to produce a very bright, highly saturated image. LG developed its??Color Refiner??filter?technology (using four color sub-pixels?? red, green, blue and white)?to enhance image contrast and color.

Taking a cue from Formula 1 race cars, the 55EM9600 uses carbon fiber to strengthen and lighten the TV?s plastic exterior. The 9600 weighs in at just 22 pounds, a record low for a 55-Inch display (and?about 29 pounds less than LG?s 55-Inch LM8600 LED LCD).

"With OLED TV leading our premium product line-up in Europe, we have a very strong case to become the No. 1?TV brand in this region," said Stanley Cho, head of LG?s Europe Operations. "Until that day, we will continue to develop the products that have made us the most innovative home entertainment company in the industry."

LCD and LED LCDs rely on light bulbs (whether fluorescent or a few dozen white LED lamps) to illuminate the image. The light from these lamps or bulbs must pass through the LCD panel before reaching the surface of the TV, causing most of the light to be beamed toward viewers sitting closest to the center of the screen. As one moves off-center, the LCD image dims, contrast decreases and colors tend to shift and desaturate.

OLEDs emits light directly from the surface, extending the viewing angle to 180 degrees and providing superb, highly saturated colors without the dimming, color shift or loss of contrast seen on LCDs and LED LCDs.

The 55EM9600 is a full-featured HDTV incorporating LG?s passive Cinema 3-D technology as well as Smart TV Internet connectivity and its own browser for streaming movies and Web surfing.

The TV will be available in three mounting versions: table top, wall mount and pole mount. Each configuration incorporates the same OLED panel but a uses a different case. The inputs and drive electronics are located within the stand on the table top model (see photo) and features a transparent arm between the base and panel. The wall mount version and pole mount models will have a separate box that houses the electronics.

Google snags the webOS Enyo team, HP says open source plans are still on schedule (Update)

At one time the Enyo app framework was supposed to help webOS run faster and on a wider variety of devices, but as HP continues to struggle, reports have surfaced from The Verge and AllThingsD that much of the team behind it, including leader Matthew McNulty, has been hired away by Google. Numbering a half dozen or so, the immediate danger is the effect this might have on HP's efforts to open source webOS, but in a statement the company indicated it remains on track and will stick to the roadmap it announced in January. Less clear is what these employees might end up working on for Google, although Enyo's focus on web apps and HTML5 suggests the possibility they'll end up working on ChromeOS projects.

Update: The remaining members of the Enyo team have also chimed in now, with a blog post indicating yes, some "key members" have left, but that "the majority of the engineering and leadership team remains." Of course, while it continues work on the product there are some job openings now, so interested coders are encouraged to toss an application HP's way.

New charges for Indiana man suspected of killing 3

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A court official says prosecutors are planning to charge a southern Indiana man with murdering a third woman, whose body was found buried in his backyard last month.

The Floyd Superior Court official says Judge Susan Orth found probable cause during a Wednesday hearing to justify charging 54-year-old William Clyde Gibson with murdering 35-year-old Stephanie Kirk. The official declined to give her name, citing court policy, but said she was at the hearing.

Gibson is due in court later Wednesday. He is already charged with murdering 75-year-old Christine Whitis last month and murdering Karen Hodella, a woman visiting from Florida, in 2002.

Gibson was arrested on drunken driving charges last month while driving Whitis' car. Authorities found Whitis' body in his home and found Kirk's buried outside.

Prague, May 23 (CTK) - The Czech cabinet Wednesday rejected Health Minister Leos Heger's (TOP 09) proposal that the state increase its health insurance contributions for children, pensioners, the unemployed and other selected groups as from next year.

The Finance Ministry, headed by Miroslav Kalousek (TOP 09), beforehand called the proposed increase by 49 crowns to 772 crowns per head and month unfeasible.

Heger's proposal, if accepted, would bring an additional 3.6 billion crowns to the health care system, which would soften the impact of the VAT increase, planned as from 2013.

Last time the state raised its health insurance contributions for the selected groups as from January 1, 2010.

The Finance Ministry said on its website that the health insurance should be kept untouched. The Health Ministry argued that the state should not give up its adequate share in regular health insurance contributions.

"The government's effort to improve the state budget balance cannot be permenently based on worsening the balance of the public health insurance system, which is also a public budget," Heger said previously.

According to data submitted by Heger, the average number of people whose insurance contributions will be covered by the state next year is 6.1 million a month.

If the state increased its contributions for the selected groups, it would pay a total of 56.5 billion crowns to the health system in 2013, some 3.6 billion more than this year.

The relevant law enables the government to adjust the insurance contributions in view of the average pay development. The average pay has inreased by an average 2.7 percent a year from 2009 to 2011.

It ensues from health insurers' data that the system will end in an overall loss of 3.5 billion crowns this year, if nothing unexpected occurs.

Spying devices in your home

Are you being stalked? Is someone listening in on you? Does an identity thief or a home invader have you under surveillance at this very moment?

It may sound fantastic, but it actually has happened. In a true case that comes straight from a techno-thriller, an attractive young lady was convinced her ex-boyfriend was monitoring her. He seemed to know things that no one else could know ? unless he was listening to her at home. As it turned out, the boyfriend ? a tech-support professional ? had set up her wireless network and knew all her passwords. He was spying on her email. He could, however, just as easily have monitored her spoken conversations.

Could it happen to you? Fortunately for all of us, the risk of listening devices being deployed in our homes is relatively minor. It is, however, real, and with the proliferation of cheap video cameras, inexpensive digital audio recorders and ?spy? equipment ? even in the form of popular children?s toys ? the odds that you?ve been bugged, that you are under surveillance, are greater than ever.

Changes in technology have driven quite a few changes in popular culture and the risks each citizen faces. It is easier than ever for ordinary citizens ? not your government, space aliens, or enemy spies ? to plant discreet, effective and very small listening devices in their homes and in the homes of others. These devices range from the benign but irritating (such as electronic gadgets that emit random chirps designed to annoy those within) to the potentially life-saving (miniaturized ?nanny cams? that allow parents to identify and obtain evidence of child abuse) to the invasive and offensive (?up-skirt? cameras hidden in public or semi-public changing rooms or toilets).

Listening devices start outside the home in the form of directional microphones. These ray-gun looking gadgets basically collect sound from long distance, allowing someone to ?bug? you without actually trespassing on your property.

Once inside the home, a bug can be placed near or in your telephone, worn on the body of a visitor, or planted directly just about anywhere. Web cameras can transmit picture and sound via the Web to anywhere. Spy cameras, especially, can be had disguised as any number of household objects and can even transmit in full color. If you want to get a good idea of just what?s out there, shop for listening devices and cameras as if you wish to bug someone else. The options available to you will amaze you, and the implications are disturbing. So what can you do?

You can go shopping, for one thing. There are countless ?bug detectors? on the market that pick up radio frequency transmissions from spy devices and wireless phones. (The same technology is applied to jamming cell phone signals in areas where the owners do not want people using their phones.) You can also purchase telephone tap detectors that connect directly to your phone line. Laser detectors used to spot camera lenses can be used to find the physical reflections of spy devices, too. For a few hundred dollars, you can detect a wide range of listening and spy equipment. This does not mean that you are completely covered. Preventing home or business spying starts with simple precautions:

Don?t allow workmen into your home whom you do not trust or have not invited. For example, if someone shows up unexpectedly claiming to be from a utility company, who needs access to some part of your home, refuse him or her entry. If it?s really important, the utility company will call you ? and they should have contacted you in writing anyway.

Don?t leave friends or family members unattended when they are visiting. Unless you have good reason to trust them completely, leaving visitors unattended means they can pretty much do whatever they wish to do, up to and including planting bugs in your phone, under your desk, or elsewhere in your home or business. In the case of a business that receives visits from the public, this may be impossible at times, but you generally never want a guest in your home or business to be left unattended if you can help it (again, unless you have good reason to trust that visitor).

Don?t speak important password information and other sensitive identity data out loud at all if you can help it. If someone is listening in to what you?re saying, the easiest way to prevent them from hearing your email password or your banking login is never to say it out loud. All passwords, for that matter, should be nonsense-terms known only to you that you have not used in conversation. This makes them that much harder to learn or overhear.

Never discuss critical information on a wireless or cordless phone. Wireless phone transmissions, and particularly cordless phone frequencies, can be picked up by scanners and other wireless devices easily and even unintentionally. Don?t give credit card numbers or other sensitive information over your cordless phone or on a mobile phone. Always use a land line.

Be aware of your surroundings. Actually look at the things you keep in your home or business, and be suspicious of items that show up unannounced or unexpected, for whatever reasons. That pen you don?t remember owning might be a listening device. It also doesn?t hurt simply to clean your home or office thoroughly now and again, keeping an eye out for any strange objects or pieces of electronic gear.

Keep it in perspective. While you are taking your precautions, remember that the actual risk that your home or office might be bugged is very low. Most of us simply don?t lead lives that the average person would find interesting enough to want to put us under surveillance.

Remember, too, that such spying can occur. Home invaders, identity thieves and sexual predators don?t care how boring your life is. Keep this in mind and make a reasonable, good-faith effort to keep your home and business free of spy equipment. As always, the responsibility for safer living falls to you.
