Google?s Mobile Future Is Now

card-flightsGoogle Now may be one of Google's most underrated new products of 2012, but I think it will turn out to be Google's killer mobile product in the long run. It's the one tool that brings together virtually everything Google knows about you and where you are and then turns all of this information into a useful dashboard on your phone. No other Google product (with the possible exception of some of its advertising services) draws up such a wealth of data about you.

2013 will see continued growth in some areas of the real estate market

We have come a long way from the dark days of 2009 and 2010 when office and industrial multi-tenant vacancy exceeded 21 percent and unanchored retail vacancy exceeded 25 percent. For eight consecutive quarters, office, industrial and retail vacancy have been steadily decreasing. Today, total office vacancy sits at 12.4 percent; multi-tenant vacancy is 17.7 percent. Total industrial vacancy is 9.3 percent; multi-tenant is 17.8 percent. Total retail vacancy is 8.7 percent while unanchored centers are 17.7 percent empty.

The next six months will see the office market continue to tighten. While lease rates do not yet warrant speculative construction, the downward trend in vacancy means it is only a matter of time before construction picks up. The only major office project set to be delivered this year is The Village at Meridian located at Eagle & Fairview. The Village will deliver 150,000 square feet of office space in the fall. The Eighth & Main building under construction in downtown Boise is not slated for completion until early 2014.

If demand accelerates, well-capitalized developers may choose to bring spec office buildings out of the ground due to the lack of available inventory, especially for larger tenants. Any new office construction will likely keep vacancy above 12 percent. However, lease rates will continue to rise throughout the year, as much as 10-15 percent in desirable locations. The market is beginning to shift in favor of landlords due to a lower inventory of prime space.

Industrial vacancy will continue to improve after the slight bump at the end of 2012 due to Transform Solar?s vacating of 254,000 square feet in Nampa. Absorption is expected to be positive for a fourth consecutive year. As industrial inventory tightens and projected supply decreases, lease rates will rise. The uptick began in 2012 and is expected to continue in 2013. Some industrial landlords have started bumping rents in projects with few remaining vacancies or that have product in high demand with tenants.

Industrial projects with good access to Interstate 84, regardless of their city, continue to have high interest, as this access is something most tenants require. Poorly located sites will continue to struggle to attract tenants. With the residential market in full recovery, industrial tenants tied to homebuilding are likely to expand into larger spaces as the need arises. New tenants currently in ?incubator? spaces, which are a large part of the current market, will look for opportunities to expand as their lease comes up for renewal. This turnover will continue to drive activity in 2013.

Speculative industrial construction will remain limited as lease rates have not yet returned to levels high enough to support new construction. However, some stronger developers may continue to bring buildings out of the ground as tenant options continue to tighten.

Retail absorption will be positive in 2013, largely due to new construction projects like the 165,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter on Overland Road and continued expansion like The Village at Meridian on Eagle Road. Retail vacancy will continue to improve, though not at the pace seen in 2012, since many of the large anchor spaces vacated in 2009 have already been leased up over the past couple of years.

Retail asking rates are likely to push up slightly in 2013, while actual lease rates will continue their recovery. Obsolete, poorly positioned properties that have remained vacant for years are likely to remain vacant as newer, better product is brought to the market.

With strong holiday sales and no anticipated store closures on the horizon, 2013 will see continued rebound in the retail market. Many retailers who had been waiting to enter the Boise market, such as Nordstrom Rack, Big Al?s Entertainment, Dave & Buster?s, H&M and Rosauer?s, opened stores in 2012. Rumors of Trader Joe?s and Sam?s Club swirl in the winter air. And I?m sure a few retailers that we aren?t even aware of will pop up as well!

The biggest variable? The fiscal cliff. Assuming that President Obama and members of Congress are able to negotiate a way around the revenue and spending impasse, commercial real estate should continue to improve in all segments in 2013. The fiscal cliff is a very real concern in commercial real estate. Many of our clients are telling us they want to hold off on new expansions and investments until they understand what the economic and tax situation will look like next year. Uncertainty keeps money in wallets. Our leaders must strike a compromise if our industry is to continue to see the gains we have achieved these last eight quarters.

Winners: Frank O'Keeffe, Ernst & Young with Digiweb's Colm Piercy (industry category), Edmond Hart of Dairymaster (overall winner of the 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year), Paul Kenny of Cobone (emerging category) and Mike McKerr, Ernst & Young

Entrepreneurs among Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Alumini were responsible for creating 12,600 new jobs in the past year and collectively these entrepreneurs employ 140,000 people and are responsible for turnover of ?15bn.

The company, which is itself creating 30 new jobs in Dublin, also revealed that companies that participated in the 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year programme created 1,000 of these new jobs in the last 12 months, bringing their collective employment to 5,000 people.

The Ernst & young Entrepreneur of the Year alumni, generated in excess of ?15 billion in revenue last Financial Year, with 83pc experiencing an average growth rate of 30pc. The 2012 finalists collectively generated revenue of almost ?600 million and grew at an average rate of 51pc last year.

?Whether at home or abroad, in good economic times or bad, entrepreneurs are constantly looking for new opportunities to expand their business and service offerings,? explained Frank O?Keeffe, partner-in-charge of the Entrepreneur of the Year programme in Ireland.

?Despite the uncertain global economy, entrepreneurs are actively looking to recruit highly qualified, innovative and most importantly experienced staff,? O?Keeffe said.

Entrepreneurs? exports in 2012

Some 73pc of the Ernst & Young Alumni exported goods and services last year. The total amount of goods exported by 153 of the entrepreneurs totals ?3.2bn.

This is mainly spilt across the three industries represented by our Alumni including; Technology (21pc), Manufacturing (20pc) and Food and Drink (15pc).

In terms of networking 45pc of the entrepreneurs in the Alumini community have done business with each other. Those that have done business with other members tend to do so multiple times.

?Government alone cannot create jobs ? but it can focus on key areas to create the conditions for entrepreneurial businesses to grow and thrive ? such as: fostering an entrepreneurial culture; providing a good education system and training to produce high quality people; the provision of access to funding; and instilling confidence through an improved regulatory environment,? O?Keeffe said.

Gramble?s Charity-Driven Gaming Network Launches in Beta

Gramble releases its social-gaming web app in open beta today, calling on its 608,000 founding players to explore its first 200 games from 69 developers plus its eight founding charity partners.

The Hague, the Netherlands (PRWEB) December 20, 2012

Today, a new social-gaming network is born as charitable start-up Gramble announces its beta release. Leading up to this launch, Gramble has been making headlines, with announcements of its $3.5 million USD in investment funding (largely from charity-lottery operator Novamedia) and recent Baby Tycoon Entrepreneur of the Year award for best new start-up in the Netherlands. However, up until now, the public has only gotten a glimpse of the innovative network via parent company Gramble World?s website, which hosts video previews tailored to players, developers, and charities.

Now that the network is open for play, Gramble?s users are encouraged to explore, interact, share, offer feedback, and most importantly play and have fun. Players will enjoy 200 games from 69 developers, including Absolutist?s ?Bubble Shooter?, Youda Games? ?Governor of Poker?, Goodgame Studios? ?Goodgame Empire?, plus collections of games from Arkadium, Breaktime Studios, MoMinis, and many many more.

As players play and explore, their activities on the site will generate donations from Gramble and its partners for the company?s charity arm, the Gramble Foundation. Players can also ?star? and ?give love? (direct donations) to their favorite charities and causes. Gramble?s eight founding charity partners include Special Effect, which helps people with disabilities play games; The Adventure Project, which supports social entrepreneurs in developing countries; Charity Miles, the exercising-for-charity app; and the International Diabetes Federation.

Selected and vetted developers and charities are offered no-risk involvement with the network (almost without restriction) through company profiles, which can be linked to existing blogs and RSS feeds. As Gramble players discover developers and charities/causes, fans can show their support by ?starring? their favorites. The more stars a company receives, the higher its profile on the network ? and, in the case of charities and causes, the higher its payout from the Gramble Foundation?s monthly funding distribution.

In addition to the good karma and top-notch game selection, players will soon find Gramble equipped with cutting-edge features like cloud saving, global chat, leaderboards, notifications, and activity feeds ? with many more enhancements in the pipeline.

?It?s been an incredible experience working with this team of highly dedicated Gramblers to bring our idea of a network that merges charity funding and gaming to life,? says Adam Palmer, Gramble?s founder. ?We?ve been so lucky to have the support of equally passionate and socially conscious partners like Gaming Incubator, Angaros Management, and ? of course ? Novamedia. We can?t wait to see how the public reacts to what we?ve created.?

Would-be players interested in participating in Gramble?s beta testing (and receiving the limited-time-only ?I WAS THERE? site achievement) are encouraged to register their username on Gramble.com as soon as possible for access to the app. Follow Gramble?s Facebook page or Twitter feed (#Gramble) to keep up with all the latest updates.

Creating the perfect bathroom for your home | Home Improvement

In many ways, the bathroom can be the most important room in your house ? yet it?s probably one of the most neglected. The bathroom is usually the room where we spend time alone (however rushed!) at the start of each day, collecting our thoughts and deciding our priorities for the day ahead. Or it?s the place we come to unwind at the end of a busy day.

So it?s always a sensible idea to try and create the perfect bathroom for your home and, even more so, for yourself. How you do this will depend on you and the type of home you live in. You will instinctively know what bathroom designs you love ? and which complement the nature of your home.

So if you live in a modern purpose-built city centre apartment, it would probably not be a good idea to install a country attic bathroom with painted floorboards etc., however much you may yearn for it ? and vice-versa.

So look to your home for what?s ?acceptable? in overall design terms, but look to yourself for what you really love.
And once you have an idea of what?s possible in your bathroom space; don?t compromise. The fact is that bathrooms are easy to fit and shouldn?t be expensive to create ? whatever anyone else tells you. Don?t skimp too much on the basics like the bath and shower fittings, shower trays, taps and shower ? but do find the best quality bargains you can, and trust your own design ideas above all others.

You?ll need to think about the practicalities of what?s possible in the space you have ? and whether you want power showers, corner baths, walk-in shower units etc. But you should then be able to achieve a great deal by working creatively with complete suites that are very cheap to buy these days ? so try not to get drawn in to wasting money needlessly. People with a good eye for colour and design should be able to achieve the ideal bathroom for them and for their home with relative ease and not too expensively.
So the starting point is inspirational bathroom ideas, then your own designs and ideas, followed by good workman (or woman?) you can work with and trust.

NBC's Richard Engel released in Syria, a journalist danger zone

The Syrian conflict is making 2012 the deadliest year on record for journalists.

NBC News Chief Correspondent Richard Engel and three members of his production crew were released safely from captivity last night, five days after being kidnapped in Syria, the news network reports. It is unclear who is responsible for the kidnapping, but the episode highlights the dangerous nature of reporting in war-torn Syria, a country the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) dubbed the deadliest place for journalists this year.

NBC reports that Mr. Engel?s captors have not been identified but are ?not believed to be loyal to the Assad regime.? (Editor's update: Engel later spoke live in Turkey and noted he believed his kidnappers were indeed pro-government shabiha militiamen.) Engel and his team went missing after crossing into Syria from Turkey last week, and there had been no communication with the network ? neither requesting ransom nor laying claim for the kidnapping ? while the team was in captivity.

After entering Syria, Engel and his team were abducted, tossed into the back of a truck and blindfolded before being transported to an unknown location believed to be near the small town of Ma?arrat Misrin. During their captivity, they were blindfolded and bound, but otherwise not physically harmed, the network said.

Early Monday evening local time, the prisoners were being moved to a new location in a vehicle when their captors ran into a checkpoint manned by members of the Ahrar al-Sham brigade, a Syrian rebel group. There was a confrontation and a firefight ensued.? Two of the captors were killed, while an unknown number of others escaped, the network said.

Engel and his team have since re-entered Turkey and say they were unharmed in the incident, NBC reports.

Syria?s conflict began in March 2011 after a government crackdown on protests calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down. The violence has spiraled into a bloody civil war that has claimed the lives of close to 40,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, according to the United Nations refugee agency.?

But, according to The Wall Street Journal, ?the multiplying of militias on both sides of the conflict has quickly and vastly complicated the scenarios for how fighting might end or a political transition may be negotiated, and what may come next after the end of the regime.?

"The civilian militias to come out of this conflict are going to make Hezbollah [in Lebanon] look like a walk in the park," Joseph Holliday, a senior research analyst at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, told the Journal. Syria is not simply seeing a faceoff between government forces and rebel fighters, but the involvement of Al Qaeda-linked fighters and Iranian militants have also been noted.

CPJ projects that 2012 will be the deadliest year yet for journalists, with 67 journalist deaths registered through mid-December alone. The high numbers are in large part attributed to the conflict in Syria and how it has impacted local and international journalists trying to report there. Four international journalists were killed in Syria in 2012, but the majority of the 28 journalists killed there this year were local reporters, largely working online.

?This feels like the first YouTube war,? BBC Middle East correspondent Paul Wood told CPJ. ?There?s a guy with a machine gun and two guys next to him with camera phones.? Mr. Wood added that local journalists are facing multiple risks. ?We?ve seen pro-regime journalists targeted by rebels ? it is well known. But opposition journalists say the regime is intent on targeting them as journalists.?

The number of fatalities related to the Syrian conflict approached the worst annual toll recorded during the war in Iraq, where 32 journalists were killed in both 2006 and 2007.

Paul Wood ? who covered Iraq and numerous other wars, said the Syrian conflict ?is the most difficult one we?ve done.? Bashar al-Assad?s government sought to cut off the flow of information by barring entry to international reporters, forcing Wood and many other international journalists to travel clandestinely into Syria to cover the conflict. ?We?ve hidden in vegetable trucks, been chased by Syrian police ??things happen when you try to report covertly.?

With international journalists blocked and traditional domestic media under state control, citizen journalists picked up cameras and notepads to document the conflict???and at least 13 of them paid the ultimate price. One, Anas al-Tarsha, was only 17 years old. At least five of the citizen journalists worked for Damascus-based Shaam News Network, whose videos have been used extensively by international news organizations.

Engel is an experienced reporter who reported on the Iraq war in its entirety and has ?covered wars, revolutions and political transitions around the world over the last 15 years,? according to NBC. But there are many factors making reporting by inexperienced journalists in high-risk countries like Syria increasingly common today.

In addition to the rise of Internet journalism, there are other factors like ?relatively cheap flights to some of the world?s trouble spots? and ?shrinking budgets for foreign news? that ?have dramatically reduced barriers to entry for would-be foreign correspondents,? reports the BBC.

For organisations working to improve the safety of journalists it?s a cause for increasing concern.

?There?s something of a worrying trend developing,? says Hannah Storm, director of the International News Safety Institute. ?I?m hearing it from people that have recently graduated. I?m seeing it on Facebook. And I see it sometimes when I talk to students in universities.

?It feels like now in places like Syria there are more and more people in their early or mid-20s with little or no experience - but with an overriding enthusiasm which makes them want to go out there and make a name for themselves, without taking the realities on board.?

Many of these young reporters are working as freelancers, which can create an additional risk. Freelance reporter Austin Tice has been missing since August when he was kidnapped near Syria?s capital, Damascus.?The Monitor reports that the?number of journalists kidnapped has gone up,?and "with the rise in the number of reporters operating in dangerous places like Syria ? and with many parties seeing value in targeting them ? many expect the threat to persist.? However, while all journalists reporting in conflict zones can expect to face threats, the increasing number of freelancers can make working in places like Syria ?particularly acute, as they are often operating without significant institutional backing and experience.?

"More and more of those journalists are freelancers because of the nature of the changing field," El Zein says, referring to the rise in the number of?freelancers reporting in dangerous places, traditionally more a world for journalists on the staff of major publications.

"Especially in Syria, the risks are very high for journalists, and a freelancer going in there without any support structure ? it can be very risky and daunting."

The Christian Science Monitor?s Tom Peter has been in and out of Syria over the course of the past few months and noted other distinct differences in reporting from Syria compared to other conflict zones in the past. ?With Aleppo just a two-hour drive from Kilis [Turkey], many journalists have opted to drive into Syria each morning and return to Turkey to write stories and sleep. Not only is it safer, but electricity and Internet access are a sure thing,? he writes.

The commute made my job of writing and filing stories easier, but it also made for a surreal reporting experience. In one afternoon, I might find myself taking cover as windows blew out around me in a bombing. By that evening, I'd be back in Kilis getting my hair cut in a barbershop where a miscommunication led to an accidental mud facial mask.

I've always thought the hardest part of conflict journalism is the anxiety you feel before and after an assignment. When you're navigating a war, you're too busy to think about the what-ifs. Commuting in and out every day creates one of the strangest cycles of stress and decompression I've ever experienced.

Diabetes remission possible with diet, exercise

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - One in nine people with diabetes saw their blood sugar levels dip back to a normal or "pre-diabetes" level after a year on an intensive diet and exercise program, in a new study.

Complete remission of type 2 diabetes is still very rare, researchers said. But they added that the new study can give people with the disease hope that through lifestyle changes, they could end up getting off medication and likely lowering their risk of diabetes-related complications.

"Kind of a long-term assumption really is that once you have diabetes there's no turning back on it, and there's no remission or cure," said Edward Gregg, the lead author on the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The research, he told Reuters Health, "is a reminder that adopting a healthy diet, physically-active lifestyle and reducing and maintaining a healthy weight is going to help manage people's diabetes better."

His team's study can't prove the experimental program - which included weekly group and individual counseling for six months, followed by less frequent visits - was directly responsible for blood sugar improvements.

The original goal of the research was to look at whether that intervention lowered participants' risk of heart disease (so far, it hasn't).

But the diabetes improvements are in line with better weight loss and fitness among people in the program versus those in a comparison group who only went to a few annual counseling sessions, Gregg's team reported Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

IS IT COST-EFFECTIVE?

About eight percent of people in the United States have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. The new study included 4,503 of them who were also overweight or obese.

People randomly assigned to the intensive program had diet and exercise counseling with a goal of cutting eating and drinking back to 1200 to 1800 calories per day and increasing physical activity to just under three hours per week.

After one year, 11.5 percent of them had at least partial diabetes remission, meaning that without medication their blood sugar levels were no longer above the diabetes threshold. That compared to just two percent of participants in the non-intervention group who saw their diabetes improve significantly.

People who'd had diabetes for fewer years were more likely to have blood sugar improvements, as were those who lost more weight or had stronger fitness gains during the study.

However, less than one-third of people whose diabetes went into remission during the program managed to keep their blood sugar levels down for at least four years, the researchers found.

"Clearly lifestyle intervention is good for people with diabetes," said Dr. John Buse, a diabetes researcher from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

"The question is how cost-effective is it, what are the long-term consequences (and) how would it really compare with alternative approaches like bariatric surgery and drug therapy?" Buse, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health.

Dr. David Arterburn, from Group Health Research Institute in Seattle, said some studies of weight-loss surgery, for instance, have found two-thirds of people who start out with diabetes have complete remission.

Arterburn, who co-wrote an editorial published with the new study, said anyone with diabetes - or at high risk - should consider either lifestyle interventions or surgery, if they're eligible, to reduce future health risks.

Gregg said his team was working on a cost-analysis of the current program, but that it was fairly "resource-intensive."

"If people have access to the support to make these sorts of changes, they may have the benefits that we've seen here," he said. But, "What we should remember is that more modest changes in lifestyle are also effective."

School shooting compels entertainment changes

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Connecticut school shooting rampage compelled Hollywood to air disclaimers before violent television shows, swap some programs for others, cancel film openings and present somber specials on daytime TV shows that are usually more focused on entertainment.

The responses came in addition to news specials on Friday's killing of 27 people, most of them school children, in Newtown, Conn., by a gunman who later took his own life.

Showtime gave its viewers a special warning Sunday before the season finales of the thriller series "Homeland," and "Dexter," a series about a serial killer.

"In light of the tragedy that has occurred in Connecticut, the following program contains images that may be disturbing," said the disclaimer before both programs.

Another cable network, HBO, postponed airings of the 2012 crime thriller "Contraband" over the weekend. The film with Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale was replaced by airings of "Crazy, Stupid Love" and the remake of "Arthur," the network said.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York canceled Monday's screening of Tom Cruise's violent new movie, "Jack Reacher," that was to include a conversation with the actor. A scheduled premiere of the movie in Pittsburgh had also been postponed over the weekend.

The TLC network postponed a Dec. 27 special, "Best Funeral Ever," about a colorful Dallas funeral home. The show, considered a pilot for a potential series, will instead air during the first week of January.

In one of the odder substitutions, NBC pulled a Blake Shelton holiday special at the last minute Friday and replaced it with one starring Michael Buble. That's because the Shelton special had an animated segment about a reindeer killing, which NBC would be removed from any future showings of the special.

It's a ritual for entertainment companies in the wake of national tragedies, noted Chris Ender, CBS entertainment spokesman: The network's series and promos are all looked at carefully with an eye toward whether any of them could be considered insensitive with the news still fresh in mind. CBS has made no changes other than doing two prime-time news specials, he said.

Fox on Sunday night replaced new episodes of its animated comedies "Family Guy" and "American Dad" with repeats amid worries they could be seen the wrong way. The "American Dad" episode featured a demon who punished naughty children at Christmas.

Several daytime talk shows, including "Katie," ''Dr. Oz," ''Dr. Phil," and "The Doctors," responded with shows Monday that were dedicated to Friday's shootings. That's unusual for these shows, which are usually taped much further in advance.

Katie Couric's show featured interviews with two families that had lost children in the shootings. In one interview, Couric asked the sobbing brother of one child killed, "Is there something you want people to know about your little brother?"

News reporters had been criticized in the immediate aftermath of the coverage for interviewing children who had been in the Newtown school during the shooting.

Both Couric and "Dr. Oz" featured interviews with spiritual leader Joel Osteen.

Talk show host Phil Graham, in addition to devoting his own program on the shooting, also appeared in Monday's episode of "The Doctors."

"Doctor's orders: Hug your family a little bit tighter today," said Travis Stork of "The Doctors."

"The View" invited ABC News' Chris Cuomo and forensic psychiatrist Michael Welner to talk about the incident. One of the show's co-hosts, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, asked Welner with tears in her eyes, "How can this happen?"

Mental Health Care and Tedddy Bears: After Sandy Hook Operation ...

GRANITE BAY?

Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference. Dede Bannister knows it.

?Because it felt like there wasn?t anything else I could do,? she said while making her drop-off at Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy II.

Adam Johns knew it too. In 2004, when 186 school children were killed in a massacre in Belzan, Russia, Adam started the first Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy.

?He was impacted by that,? said his mom, Deborah Johns.

She and Adam?s brother are behind Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy?II. It?s an effort to send support, teddy bears and donations, to the families of Newtown, Connecticut.

They are doing it in Adam Johns? memory. He took his own life in March, 2011.

Deborah Johns still clutches the teddy bear someone gave her after Adam?s death. She says it helps, but she says the real help would be to begin a real conversation about mental health in America.

Johns is convinced that if we treated mental health care like we do physical health care, her son and 27 people in Newtown would still be alive today.

?We have to take it out of the darkness and into the light. And work with it,? Johns said.

If you?d like to donate to Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy II, you can drop off stuffed animals or money to and Beach Hut Deli location, or contact Johns directly at this email: customerservice@p7clothing.com

The chart above shows the 30 occupations that are expected to experience the largest job growth between 2010 and 2020, according to employment forecasts from the BLS. Between 2010 and 2020, the BLS estimates that the total number of U.S. jobs will increase by 20.4 million, from 143 million in 2010 to 163.5 million by 2020. The number of jobs created this decade in the top 30 fastest growing occupations ? 9.3 million ? will represent almost half of all of the new jobs created by 2020.

What?s really interesting is that only five of the top 30 occupations expected to create the most jobs by 2020 require a college degree or more (nursing, post-secondary teachers, elementary school teachers, accountants and physicians), and ten of the fastest growing occupations don?t even require a high school diploma. Moreover, of the top nine occupations expected to create the most jobs this decade, only one (nursing) requires a 4-year college degree.

The total amount of student loan debt carried by college graduates now exceeds $1 trillion for the first time, and many college graduates are having trouble finding jobs. Given the job forecasts for this decade, perhaps this is more evidence that we?ve completely oversold the value of a 4-year college degree, at least for many of the college majors. Students graduating from college this decade with degrees in nursing, education or accounting will have great career opportunities, but many of their classmates may not be so fortunate (unless they go to medical school or get a doctoral degree).

Happening Fitness Tips | Brevard Happening

Every day in Brevard County has the potential to be a beach day, whether you frequent Cocoa, Melbourne, or Satellite beaches. Living in this region brings the added pressure of getting or staying in shape, especially right after the indulgent holiday season! Some people find lifting weights intimidating, so they generally stick to aerobic exercises such as jogging and walking. However, anaerobic exercise is extremely important and beneficial when it comes to overall fitness and the way you look.

What is anaerobic exercise? ?Anaerobic exercise is high intensity muscular activity that lasts for a short period of time, such as lifting weights or sprinting. Contrary to popular belief, you can burn the same amount of calories ? and even more ? doing an intense weight lifting session compared to cardio. Fear not, ladies ? lifting weight doesn?t mean you?re going to transform into a bulky bodybuilder. Anaerobic exercise has multiple benefits that will leave you looking and feeling great.

What anaerobic exercise does:

Prevents Health Problems ? Strength training can help to prevent cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and lower back pain. The body uses glucose (aka sugar) as fuel during workouts, but if not used, it ends up being stored as fat and can lead to health risks. It can also help to alleviate these ailments if you already suffer from them. It can also strengthen your immune system.

Builds and Maintains Lean Muscle - A common misconception is that muscle loss is a result of aging; but in reality, it is the result of a sedentary lifestyle. This is a case of ?if you don?t use it, you lose it.? Strength training is a great way to maintain or build muscle to keep you strong and functionally fit.

Increases Metabolism ? The building and maintaining of lean muscle boosts the body?s metabolism. Muscle is an active tissue, and using the muscles or even just by carrying more muscle on your body compared to someone who leads a sedentary lifestyle, will result in your body burning more calories throughout the day.

The XLR8 ROM Machine

Strengthens Bones ? Millions of people suffer from osteoporosis, and drinking milk and supplementing calcium may not cut it. Strength training will increase the strength and density of your bones more than any other type of exercise.

Improves Aesthetics ? Last but not least, anaerobic exercise helps you look good! It will reshape and tone your body like no other exercise can.

Having a balance between aerobic and anaerobic exercise is key, and both are necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle. For those of you that hate the common aerobic exercises, use strength training style workouts to get your cardio in as well. Using the HIIT (high intensity interval training) method of training and doing sets with shorter rest periods will really get the heart going. The XLR8 ROM Machine gives you the best of both worlds: you get a quick yet intense full body anaerobic workout while also getting your heart pumping through cardio. So whether you?re in shape or are longing for that beach body, don?t neglect anaerobic exercise when it comes to fitness.

New Jersey residents settle with feds over immigration raids ...

Read the article below from the Star Ledger and post your thoughts?

Eight N.J. residents to receive nearly $300K after settling with feds over immigration raids

By Dan Goldberg, New Jersey Star Ledger

It was a little after dawn on a still chilly April morning.

Ana Galindo had just gotten out of the shower when she heard a commotion in Paterson her home. She threw on a dirty T-shirt and came to the bathroom door where she was allegedly confronted by a man she did not know. He demanded her identification.

Galindo showed her New Jersey driver?s license, but the man, she said, wasn?t satisfied.
?Where are the illegal people,? she was asked.

?If you don?t tell me where they are, things will get worse. If you don?t tell me where they are, we?ll arrest you,? one man said, according to a lawsuit brought on Galindo?s behalf.

That suit, filed against the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was settled this morning. Galindo is one of eight New Jersey plaintiffs who will split $295,000 from the federal government.

The compensation helps, Galindo said, but neither the money nor time has dulled the shame of that 2008 encounter.

Galindo and her husband William Chavez remember six agents inside their Paterson home, and another guarding the door.

One was in Galindo?s face, she said, demanding to know where she was hiding the 15 illegal immigrants who supposedly lived in her 2-bedroom home.

As the shouting continued, Galindo?s 9-year old son ran out of his room half-dressed for school. The agent drew his gun and pointed it at the boy?s chest.

?Other than when my mother and father died, this is the worst thing I?ve ever lived through,? said Galindo, a legal immigrant. ?They could have killed my only child.?

An agent allegedly said, ?if you?re hiding illegal people here, we?re going to take your son and your residency away.?

The men stayed a few minutes longer before the lone female agent said they had made a mistake; this was the wrong house. Then, according to Chavez, the agent said she might need some roofing done, and asked for his business card.

This was one story. There were several similar stories told in the 148-page complaint filed in 2008 in U.S. District Court in Newark.

Armed ICE agents allegedly rounded up people in the middle of the night, handcuffed teenagers in their underwear, stuck guns in the chests of suspects and ?forcibly? prevented one person from calling her lawyer.

Sandy Hook school shooting: Democrats speak up on gun control

Following the Sandy Hook school shooting that killed 20 first graders and six adults, Democrats are speaking up on gun control. They'll introduce a bill banning the sale of assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition clips.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / December 16, 2012

Ian Shull and his sister Olivia Shull receive a hug from their aunt Denise Mancini during a community meeting about gun control at the C. H. Booth Library in Newtown, Connecticut Sunday. Twelve girls, eight boys and six adult women were killed in a shooting on Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

In the wake of the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama may be avoiding one of politics? third rails ? gun control ? for now, at least. But senior Democrats in Congress are feeling no such hesitancy.

On NBC?s ?Meet the Press? Sunday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she will reintroduce legislation to ban the sale of assault-type weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips ? both of which were used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that killed 20 first graders and six adult school staff, including the principal and teachers.

On Saturday, the medical examiner reported that alleged shooter Adam Lanza had shot each of the victims multiple times before killing himself with a semi-automatic rifle patterned after a military firearm.

On Sunday, Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance reported that Lanza had hundreds of bullets in magazines that held 30 bullets each.?A federal ban on such weapons, passed during the Clinton administration, expired in 2004.

How much do you know about the Second Amendment? A quiz.

Although President Obama has voiced support for such a ban, he has not pushed the issue, even though polls indicate public support.

A CNN/ORC poll, conducted in the aftermath of the mass shooting incidents in Colorado and Wisconsin, found 57 percent of adults favoring a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of assault weapons, with 60 percent saying they would support a ban on the possession of high-capacity ammunition clips.?

?I?m going to introduce it in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House,? Sen. Feinstein said on "Meet the Press." "It can be done."

?We?ve tried to take my bill from ?94 to 2004 and perfect it, and we believe we have,? she said. ?We exempt over 900 specific weapons that will not fall under the bill. But the purpose of this bill is to get ? weapons of war, off the streets of our cities.?

Citing the spate of mass shooting in the United States in recent years, Sen. Chuck Schumer said, ?I think we could be at a tipping point.?

?The public will not accept as a new normal one of these events happening every month,? Sen. Schumer said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Arizona pulls out 65-64 win over No. 5 Florida

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) ? Mark Lyons hit a contested layup with 7 seconds left and No. 8 Arizona rallied from a six-point deficit in the final minute to pull out an improbable 65-64 win over No. 5 Florida on Saturday night.

Arizona (8-0) struggled with Florida's mix of zone and man defenses, falling behind by 11 in the second half before rallying late. The Wildcats used their press to force consecutive turnovers on inbounds plays, pulling within 64-63 after Grant Jerrett hit one of two free throws.

Arizona fouled Kenny Boynton, who missed the front end of a 1-and-1, then raced to the other end for Lyons' driving shot.

Florida (7-1) botched its final possession, fumbling the ball away before taking a wild 3-pointer.

Solomon Hill had 18 points, Nick Johnson added 15 and Lyons 14 to give Arizona its best start since opening the 1998-99 season with eight straight wins.

Mike Rosario led Florida with 16 points and Erik Murphy added 15.

The Gators and Wildcats cruised through their early schedules to set up the McKale Center's first matchup between top 10 teams since 2004.

Florida came to the desert with a stifling defense ? second nationally at 48.3 points per game ? and the nation's third-widest margin of victory, winning by an average of 25.3 points. The Gators have a talented frontline, experienced guards and good balance.

Florida turned its first true road game of the season into a walkover, holding Florida State to its lowest point total ever at the Tucker Center in a 72-47 win on Dec. 5.

Arizona also has a talented frontcourt and steady guards, though is a bit more offensively oriented, averaging nearly 80 points while winning by 20 a game. The Wildcats rely on three heralded freshmen ? Kaleb Tarczewski, Brandon Ashley and Jerrett ? but also have a core of veteran players coach Sean Miller can turn to when things get tight.

The older guys came through down the stretch in a win over Southern Miss on Dec. 4 and again last Saturday, when Lyons, a graduate transfer from Xavier, scored 20 points in a 66-54 road win over Clemson.

Putting the Gators and Wildcats together on the same court set up one of college basketball's best nonconference games of the season, one that had the McKale Center rocking despite the late start and school out for the semester.

The teams put on an offensive show in the early going, trading 3-pointers and baskets inside.

Arizona couldn't keep it up.

Struggling against Florida's ever-changing defense, the Wildcats couldn't seem to make anything, open or contested, and had some careless turnovers while going 7? minutes between field goals. Arizona hit a few shots to get the crowd back into it, then went cold again, falling behind 30-19.

The Gators slowed down on offense, too, just a little later.

Florida went through a shooting funk midway through the first half, hit a few shots and labored down the stretch, going scoreless over the final 3:06 to shoot 12 of 33.

Arizona closed within 32-29 at halftime after Johnson hit consecutive 3-pointers and Hill scored on a breakaway dunk off a steal just before the buzzer. The Wildcats shot 9 of 22 in the half.

Arizona kept missing to start the second half. Florida didn't.

The Gators made seven of their first eight shots, going up 49-39 on Scottie Wilbekin's 3-pointer from the wing.

But the Wildcats weren't done, finally getting a few shots to fall and pulling to 61-58 on long 3-pointers by Johnson and Lyons from the same spot with about 5 minutes left to set up the wild finish.

davidmoor35: How Popular Your Site Is - Link Building | Online ...

What is link?
The link (hyperlink or Web link) is a connection from one web resource to another. Internet begins with the hyperlink and a person goes from one page to another page by clicking link.

Link Popularity: It is not Page Rank. Link popularity is the measure of how popular your page is and how many links are directed to your site; and the quality of the sites that are directed to your site. Link popularity is defined as the number of links that point to a site. The search engines consider this links as some kind of votes in the sites favor.

Link popularity is one of the biggest tools to improve your website ranking. And website promotion depends largely on this tool. For effective link popularity, you can also hire an online link popularity service from an internet marketing expert. The higher number of inbound links on your websites ensures the higher link popularity for you.

So increasing your link popularity is still the best website marketing strategy but try to get only good links from related sites. This way you'll benefit from the direct targeted traffic and you'll have good search engine positioning too.

There are a few things you should be aware of and guard against in your quest for link popularity. These can be summed up in two words: Quantity and Quality. The quality of the site you are linking to is also super important. So be sure to check out the site you are linking to before you commit to linking.

Some webmasters tend to go for goal right out the box creating hundreds and hundreds of incoming links through in some cases black hat techniques like link farms. But most build their links the hard way by manually exchanging links and manually submitting links to human edited directories.

As your link popularity increases then your link building can increase along with the growth. The idea is to stay consistent with your link marketing, link building campaigns and avoid going to fast to soon.

Apart from having the right keywords and good reputation, link popularity can be earned through link exchange. Link exchanges could greatly up your site on search engines, therefore, drive more traffic to your site.

Another great strategy in gaining link popularity is the overall content of your site. Do you have interesting material? Why should anyone bother linking to your site? Sometimes, sites with great content get linked by viewers on other sites.

Be judgmental on quality than the quantity of the links. If you follow the process sincerely with an utmost desire to success, you will see your website gaining link popularity on each successive day. Thus, link popularity service is one of the best ways to achieve the much desired ranking in the search engines.

It's Photo Shoot Season! - 4 Tips on Getting Great Family Photos ...

When I first became a mother, I planned elaborate photo shoots with my daughter. I hoped to capture every moment, every memory on film. I was absolutely amazed that I played a part in creating this lovely little person and wanted to document her journey here on earth. I had a schedule. She would get her pictures taken every three months?and that?s just counting professional photos. I would spend hours selecting outfits, booking appointments and picking proofs. I was disappointed when she refused to smile, fought me over wardrobe changes or?didn?t?want to be bothered. I spent hundreds of dollars on photography sessions, and after exhausting my energy and money, I ended up placing the pictures in a drawer, forgetting to distribute them to all of our family members. And as time went on, I didn?t stick to the schedule. Sometimes we took photos back-to-back. Other times we went months without posing for a picture. And you know what? My favorite photo is one that wasn?t planned! I hardly had on any makeup, and it was late at night on her first birthday. My talented cousin lit the picture beautifully.

Now, I don?t follow a calendar. I schedule Christmas card shoots, but other than that, we live life, snapping shots when we feel like it. This morning, a friend of mine, Joanne Wallington, who?s beautiful family is featured in this story, reminded me that you can?t control family photography. Here?s a simple way to get a shot without getting stressed.

Photos Courtesy:?Danae Hampton

1. Dress Alike

Picture 1 of 4

You don?t have to dress up, but dress alike. Coordinate colors and outfits. And throw out the red and green dress code if you like! You can still make a Christmas card wearing white, blue or even purple.

BMWK ? Please share with us your experiences with trying to get a family photo. ?Did you ever pay for pictures?only to forget to share them?

Security: What to look for in your internet hosting provider

Whether you are running a small web start-up, a non-profit organisation, a large e-commerce website, or an international brand, your business undoubtedly holds important information on its servers. Businesses can find themselves in hot water should their servers be compromised, with heavy penalties for companies who do not take the right precautions.

The headlines are hit with tales of security breaches on an almost daily basis, with large companies falling prey to hack attacks and viruses which render them powerless. Recent incidents in November 2012 include alleged breaches to the servers of ImageShack, Symantec and PayPal by a hacker group named HTP. In the same week, hackers gained access to and defaced websites belonging to NBC, as well as a Lady Gaga fan site.

According to Computer Weekly, there are thousands of virtual servers left unprotected and exposed on the web. In fact, it has been reported that most organisations fail to implement the necessary protection for data held in a virtual setting, which leaves hundreds of websites and databases open to attack.

Many servers could be accessed in under a minute by running a simple password hash against rainbow tables ? even a well thought out username and password is of little use in this instance. Once a hacker has gained access to the server, they have their hands on everything stored therein.

The penalty of a security breach

The penalties for companies that lose data are purposefully set high in an attempt to encourage organisations to be vigilant when it comes to protecting sensitive data. In the last month alone, the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) fined Stoke-on-Trent City Council ?120,000 after they breached data protection by emailing unencrypted data about a child protection legal case to the wrong person. The ICO said the severity of the penalty depicted the importance of protecting sensitive data when storing or sending online.
Such a fine could be fatal to a small business or organisation.

How to guarantee secure hosting

It doesn?t matter how large or small your enterprise, security should be a central focus of every action you perform online ? from choosing complex, one-time-only passwords to encrypting files. By implementing a strong security culture at every level of your organisation, you can vastly improve the security of your business.

When signing up with a hosting provider, businesses and organisations should ask detailed questions regarding web security. For example, e-commerce businesses should enquire about and invest in an SSL certificate, providing peace of mind for the organisation and customers alike that important details are encrypted.

Check that your secure hosting provider offers vulnerability scans as part of its offering, to ensure your servers are safe from backdoors, Trojans, CGI abuses and vulnerabilities.

Firewalls are vital for all data stored online; ensuring the only traffic that makes it onto your network is legitimate. Your Firewall should be monitored for complete confidence that your servers are secured from malicious attack. A monitored Firewall will log all suspicious attempts to gain access ? providing information should someone attempt to breach the security of your network.
